2013 Charles Van Canneyt Pinot Noir Bourgogne Rouge

The laws of Burgundy can be quite confusing and convoluted. Usually when a wine is labeled as “Bourgogne Rouge” it is made with Pinot Noir grapes grown all throughout Burgundy. However, the best examples of Bourgogne Rouge come from what’s called “De-Classified” parcels of more prestigious vineyards, whether they be just outside the delineation of a 1er Cru vineyard or younger vines sold off because there not ready to go into the Domaine’s top cuvées. Whatever the case, after tasting it, I’m certain that these grapes came from higher quality sites than just a hodgepodge throughout the entire Burgundy region.

Not only do the grapes for this wine come from higher quality vineyard sites, but also the hands working with them belong to one of the best. Charles Van Canneyt is the winemaker for the famed Domaine Hudelot-Noellat and is the grandson of Alain Hudelot himself. The Noellat Domaine has holdings in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world, including Richebourg and Romanee Saint Vivant. While Domaine Hudelot-Noellat is crafted for his family, Canneyt crafts the wines of his own label purely to express his own voice as a winemaker.

Since typical Bourgogne Rouge usually STARTS around $30 or above, this already unbelievable wine becomes even more of a must have at this amazing price point. Drink now and enjoy or be rewarded by a couple of years of patience with this one.

MySomm’s Tasting Notes: “The nose on this wine reminds me of my personal favorite Burgundy region, Chambolle-Musigny. It’s pretty and feminine with enticing aromas of black cherries, strawberries soaked in rose water, and exotic dried herbs. Light and silky on the palate the wine has layers and layers of complexity with flavors of of bright red fruit, perfumed spices, and damp forest floor. The wine has incredible tension and precision with pure minerality and refreshing acidity on the long finish. An absolute over-achiever.”

MySomm Price: $19.62/btl
Note: This wine was featured on Master Sommelier Ian Cauble’s website at $26
