2013 The Paring Red Blend, California

Out of all the wines in the world, Screaming Eagle is one of the most difficult to procure and the most expensive wine available in California by far. Screaming Eagle has a sister winery, owned by the same people, called Jonata. The Jonata wines are excellent as well and hover around the $100 price point, giving you a Screaming Eagle-esque wine at a fraction of the cost. However, that’s still a wine above most people’s regular price range.

I’m always on the hunt for amazing quality value Cabs/Blends from California and I don’t think I’ve come across one more exciting than the Paring, a winery with Matt Dees and the team behind Jonata, The Hilt and the cult classic Screaming Eagle at the helm.

I can say without a doubt that I have never tasted a California Cab/Blend with this much DEPTH & COMPLEXITY at this price point. It’s a stunner that’s absolutely not to be missed.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, 4 of the 5 classic Bordeaux varietals. It has an intense & powerful nose of cherry cola, mocha and a plethora of spices and herbs like anise, lavender and a very pretty note of roasting sage. A powerhouse on the palate, the wine is deep & rich with a silky, crushed velvet mouthfeel and potent flavors of chocolate covered black cherries, smoky truffles, and espresso nibs. Subtle nuances of savory balsamic, blackberries, & mint leave the palate dancing. It’s a stunning value of a wine to be enjoyed on the table at dinner this weekend or left in the cellar for a couple of years.”
