2015 Domaine Sigalas Assytiko-Athiri Santorini, Greece

One of the most beautiful things about wine is that it’s like drinking history in a glass. There is almost no place on earth that has been doing it as long as Greece. The origins of Greek wine-making go back over 6,500 years. There is evidence suggesting that Greece is home to the second oldest known grape wine remnants discovered in the world as well as the world’s earliest evidence of crushed grapes.

Over the years the wine culture in Greece has fluctuated quite a bit but over the last couple decades, due to stricter regulations and increased vineyard management, the level of quality has improved greatly. There is no more prolific producer of greek wine than Domaine Sigalas. They are among Greece’s finer white wine producers and their name is on the short list for the best.

The wines from Sigalas are some of my favorite in the entire world and in my opinion there are very few finer white wines than the Assyrtiko based wines of Domaine Sigalas.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “This wine is 75% Assyrtiko and 25% Athiri. Fermented in stainless steel, this delicious Greek white is as crisp and lively as they come. The nose is fresh and vibrant, bursting with tons of citrus zest, zingy minerality and fresh herb characteristics. The mouthfeel is light, pure, & full of life. Lemon, lime and grapefruit zest flavors on the palate are enveloped by a bracing minerality and ultra-vibrant acidity. This is an awesome white wine for any occasion and is great with food, especially shellfish. It is the ultimate white for drinking outdoors on warm days.”

MySomm Price: $19.50/btl Delivered

Greek wines don’t get anywhere near the recognition they deserve. There are some amazing wines coming out of there andSigalas produces the most profound examples of the Assyrtiko grape in the world.

I’m very excited to be offering you this beautiful Greek wine. Assyrtiko and Domaine Sigalas are a grape and winery that you need to get to know. I know you will be hooked once you try them out.
