2015 Tenuta Maccan Cabernet Franc Friuli-Venezia Giulia

After tasting hundreds of wines each year for about 10 years now, I can’t say that there are many “firsts” anymore. When I tasted this wine last week, it was a “first”. I have had some Italian Cabernet Francs before, mostly in Super Tuscans, but the Friuli region is known mostly for its whites, not its reds and definitely not the noble Bordeaux varietal Cabernet Franc. However, it does make some sense when you consider that Friuli is in the North East of Italy, just below Austria and sees a very cool climate. It just so happens that one of the best regions for Cabernet Franc in the world, the Loire Valley, also has a very cool climate.

Tenuta Maccan only makes 650 cases of this unique red. The house was only founded in 2012 but sits upon land with a winemaking history going back to 1788. Winemaker Stefano Maccan’s family has farmed the land for three generations but it was Stefano who decided to make wine. Stefano says, “My family’s passion for farming grew inside me until it became something more than mere curiosity & turned into determination… the determination finally to produce my own family wine.”

I, for one, am glad that he did. Let me know how many of these you would like and I will let you know when they arrive later this week.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “This wine has a lovely, classic Cabernet Franc nose, reminding me of Chinon and Bourgeil. The nose has vibrant red fruit, cigar smoke, a touch of juniper, & a hint of bay leaf. It’s medium bodied, with moderate tannins that are rustic & grippy without being austere. Flavors of pomegranate and plum are succulent while tones of crushed rock, lavender, & jasmine add some complex subtlety. Drink Now-2025.”
