This wine bring out vivid olfactory memories of one of my all-time favorite reds, the St. Joseph from Pierre Gonon, which I had for the first time in a small wine shop in Hermitage with one of the most colorful characters in wine, a robust gentlemen known as “Le Grec”. I have collected it ever since.
If you’re a fan of Rhone wines, whether they be from the North or South, you must become familiar with Chateau du Saint Cosme. They are probably best known for their Gigondas, producing some of the leading wines of that region. But they truly run the gamut, making excellent quality wines from Vin du Pays to top Cote Rotie to some of the best Gigondas in the world.
I tasted this 2017 vintage Cotes du Rhone yesterday and was exceedingly impressed. You do not often see Cotes du Rhone that are 100% Syrah and, while it’s understandable why, after tasting this I sure wish we saw it more often. Decanter Magazine describes the 2017 vintage in the Cotes du Rhone as “Small…but perfectly formed?”. Out of that vintage, Gigondas was said to have the best of all the Southern Appellations and to our great benefit, Gigondas is the region that the majority of the Syrah grapes for Saint Cosme’s 2017 Cotes du Rhone happen to be from.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “This 100% Syrah exhibits exuberant aromas of spicy crusted violets, worn leather, super fresh blackberries, & just a subtle hint of the kalamata olives so often found with it’s Northern Rhone big brothers. On the palate it’s medium-bodied with moderate tannins that are unmistakable yet integrated extremely well. Reminding me of the lovely St. Joseph from Pierre Gonon, this wine displays such gorgeously intense flavors of blue fruits, dark flowers, anise, spices, & exotic wood. The finish is dry with underlying hints of earth. This wine will go extremely well with a wide array of food. Don’t miss out on it at this price point!”
