I hope that you all had a wonderful Holiday weekend. As we near the end of the list of the top wines of 2016 there is one major region that we haven’t heard from yet…Burgundy. My top three favorite wines in the world are Champagne, Northern Rhone, & Burgundy (not necessarily in that order.) Of all the Burgundies that I tasted this year none stood out to me as offering more quality for the price as the Michel Juillot “Meix Juiillot” Mercurey Rouge. I sampled this wine on two separate occasion this year, months apart, and each time I was blown away.
In Mercurey, a village nestled in Burgundy on the famous Côte Chalonnaise, the Michel Julliot Estate, which has existed for four generations, cultivates 30 hectares of vines producing a large selection of the best “climats” Mercurey has to offer as well as several Côte de Beaune crus.
MySomm Tasting Notes: “The 2014 “Meix Juillot” provides immediate pleasure as a plethora of red fruit and baking spice aromas jump out of the glass. Red cherries, clove, cinnamon, & nutmeg join with seductive rose petal and dried herb aromas. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with an absolutely sensual, silky texture. Dried cranberry and pomegranate dance in the mouth and are accented by smoky basil nuances. The finish is long and clean with underlying earth and mineral tones and a very refreshing, mouth-watering acidity. Drink Now-2024!”

Those of you who are familiar with Burgundy know that, in general, the high quality ones tend to be fairly expensive. That only adds to the allure of this wine. This is definitely one of the best Burgundies that I had this year and was one of the best value Burgundies that I have EVER had. Don’t miss out on this gem.
