MySomm’s #9 Wine of 2016 – Ausonia “Machaon” Pecorino d’Abruzzo, Italy

All of the wines on this list made it for different reasons. This one made it because it was the most interesting White Wine (and one of the most interesting wines in general) that I tasted this year. I’ve had wines made from the Pecorino grape before, but the combination of that intriguing varietal with this outstanding producer make it stand out to me more than any other Whites tasted these past 12 months.

Pecorino is an ancient Italian white grape variety believed to have grown wild in the mountains of the Marche in Abruzzo (a coastal region northeast of Rome). Vine growers have only recently rediscovered Pecorino, in the pursuit of reintroducing native grapes to this wine region. With its flowery aromas, ripe and tangy flavors and touch of tropical fruit, Pecorino is exotic and intriguing.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “I’m a sucker for gorgeously aromatic white wines. The nose here is blossoming with tropical fruit & white flowers. Pineapple, apricot, mango, and honeysuckle all explode out of the glass in an extremely seductive way. These aromas alone would fall flat if there wasn’t so much precision and purity on the palate. Dry, driven by tropical fruit and mineral, the wine contains an unmistakeable characteristic of salinity that I have rarely come across in another wine. The wine is the complete package, the perfect summer white. The combination of floral elegance, ripe tropical fruit, and slight hint of savory salinity makes this a totally unique wine not to be missed.”
