While I enjoy all types of wines, what I’m always seeking are wines that are made with passion and care and show a sense of the place from which they came. Picayune Cellars certainly fits those requirements. The word “Meritage” gets used often as a term to indicate any red blend. The truth is, for a California wine to legally be called a “Meritage” it must contain at least three of the five noble Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, & Malbec. This is a true Meritage blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Cabernet Franc, & 28% Merlot.
Winemaker Claire Weinkauf is the wife of Aron Weinkauf, winemaker of one of (if not the best) Cabernets in California… Spottswoode. With the relationships that she and her family have made over time, Claire is able to purchase prime fruit from around the Napa Valley. In fact, the sources are often so good that Claire often has to sign confidentiality agreements with those from whom they purchase fruit because why would you ever buy that $100 bottle again if you knew you were getting the same fruit at this great price!

MySomm Tasting Notes: “Dark garnet color, exuberant nose of fresh blueberries and cassis with hints of cappuccino aromas. In the palate, Padlock opens up on more dark fruits with seductive truffle and garrigue notes. The texture is rich and intricate, the tannins are firms. Padlock 2016 is bigger than any of its predecessor because the blend is a bit different but it remains a well-balanced and elegant wine. Enjoy the lengthy and sexy finish!”
