In Ancient Rome, Domus Aurea, the “Golden House”, was the opulent home of Emperor Nero that he had lavishly restored after the Great Fire of 64 AD. (I guess Nero needed some better acoustics for his fiddle playing.).
There is another Domus Aurea that lies in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Chile. You may not have come across this wine before because the Peña family is committed to extremely low yields. I haven’t seen this wine on the market frequently, that’s why when I was offered some, I took everything available in the State right now!

Parker Rated 96 Points: “Balanced and elegant. Notes of mint and eucalyptus, intermixed with hints of spices (cola nut and Jamaica pepper), and it’s quite aromatic, with cassis aromas and good ripeness. It has the Domus character, which is what they search for, as well as the wild character from the mountains and the stones, with that dry sensation and somewhat austere palate… a textbook Cabernet.”
MySomm Tasting Notes: “I concur that this is a balanced, elegant wine. The nose shows intense red fruit aromas but the real stars here are the floral & spice notes. They really give this an exotic edge. On the palate, it’s everything you want in a good Cab, robust and full-bodied with structured tannins and a long finish. Not a fruit-bomb but ripe and powerful. This is a truly great wine and there are only a couple of cases!”
