2016 Fredreic Berne “Les Terrasses” Chrioubles, Cru Beaujolais

As a wine shop owner, there is little that’s more exciting than finding a wine that gives you that “epiphany experience”. Now I believe that everyone can only have one true “epiphany wine”, that wine that you’ll never forget, the one you can still smell to this day. There are wines, though, that can give us that reminder, bring us back to a place where we were mentally when we tasted that “epiphany.” This is one such wine.

This is a wine that was exposed to me by my good friend, the man who inspired me to want to become a Sommelier, John Mitchell, former Sommelier of Stella Restaurant in New Orleans. If you’ve ever met John you know that there are few who are more passionate, and show more excitement about awesome new wines. Still, I could tell there was a little something extra in his voice when he was discussing the Berne wine with me.

After growing up on a farm in Beaujolais, the first day that Frederic walked into his internship at IBM, he knew that life in a suit and tie was not for him. He came back to France and spent time working with Robert Perroud in Brouilly as well as Bret Brothers at their Biodynamic estate in the Macon region. After a decade of internship and practice, Berne found his home in the Chateau des Vergers, a 17th century mansion in the small town of Lantignie. (In addition to his current holdings, Berne, also owns land here, and believes that Lantignié will, someday, be the eleventh cru of Beaujolais). It is here, in the ancient cellars of Vergers, where Berne makes wines of extraordinary purity which erase the boxes of traditional or modern. In 2016, the French wine organization AdVini awarded Berne the title “Wine grower of the future.” With 50 candidates and 7 finalists, the award is given to the vigneron/vigneronne who represents “an ambitious project that enhances his/her wine region and whose wines are selected by the finest restaurants in France and abroad.”

“I know that his wines will be featured in my store for as long as I can get them.” is what I said when I featured the 2015 vintage a year ago. Now the new 2016 vintage has arrived and once again I’m thrilled to be able to offer it to you.

Simply respond to this e-mail with your quantity desired and the wines will arrive on Thursday, ready for your pick up. I can’t wait for you to try this new vintage of this wonderful wine.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “Bright magenta coloring, with a brilliant crystalline quality that reflects the soul of this wine. The nose has concentrated raspberries & blackberries, rose petal, licorice, & dusty dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied with juicy, savory flavors of candied bacon, Earl Gray tea, & spicy floral tones. The finish is bright & lively with wonderful acidity and underlying mineral undertones.”
