The Guillaume Gonnet Lirac has been one of the most popular wines that MySomm has featured in the three years I’ve been in business. The Gonnet family has been settled near Chateauneuf du Pape since 1600. After centuries of growing and selling grapes, Etienne Gonnet created a winery in 1950.
Over the years I’ve become well acquainted with Craig Baker, who is responsible for bringing the Gonnet wines to us. Craig arranged for Guillaume Gonnet to create this line just for him and in turn Craig has partnered with my friends at MISA imports in Dallas to direct import these wines to us at incredible prices.
Lirac is the Southernmost village in the Cotes du Rhone region but is by no means a simple Cotes du Rhone. Despite it’s similarities to Chateauneuf du Pape (it shares the same type of soil, sits about the same distance from the Rhone River, and is at the same elevation) Lirac doesn’t get nearly the recognition as CNDP because it is tiny by comparison. Barely 10,000 cases of Lirac were imported into the U.S. last year, nearly 600% less than Chateauneuf du Pape.
The average price for wines from Lirac on WineSearcher.com is $25. That is why the connections between Craig Baker wines, MISA Imports, and MySomm are so important. This is hands down one of the best price/quality Rhone wines that I have ever come across.
MySomm Tasting Notes: “80% Grenache/20% Syrah. The nose on this wine is enticing and exotic, full of aromas of ripe strawberries and juicy raspberries accompanied by baking spice and floral accents and nuanced herbal tones. The mouthfeel is seductively silky, medium bodied and bursting with succulent fruit. In addition to the bright red and blue fruit the palate on this wine is accented with delicate hints of licorice, cigar box, and smoky embers. This Lirac shows an amazing balance between power and purity with the rich fruit notes accompanied by pure minerality and refreshing acidity. Drink Now!”
