Domaine Pfister “Cuvee 8” Bas Rhin, Alsace

Melanie Pfister is a rising star in Alsace. After internships at wineries like Zind Humbrecht, Cheval Blanc, & Chateau d’Yquem, she has now become the first female winemaker in family’s winery, which has been cultivating vines in the Bas-Rhin since 1780.

It is no hyperbole when I say that this is one of the best and most exciting white wines I’ve ever tasted. It features a blend of the Noble Grapes of Alsace: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, & Muscat. Each year the percentages vary according to what variety does best, but the order is preserved. Accordingly, the wine is intended to reflect the best of a given year and to be a flagship wine of Alsace. The varieties are picked separately and fermented individually before being blended.

This is one of the best and most exciting wines I’ve tasted this year…maybe even ever. It’s truly special. I cannot wait for you guys to taste this one!

MySomm Tasting Notes: “One of the most exotic, complex, & exciting noses that I’ve ever encountered. Too many things to list but the most prominent are gorgeous aromas of orange blossom, lemon tart, ginger, white pepper and honey suckle. Each sniff is a new adventure. Despite the pretty aromatics, on the palate this wine is dry. The palate is beautifully balanced, with intense mineral & precision but with an added touch of creaminess in the texture that comes from some extended lees aging. Flavors of mascarpone, lemon curd, and limestone dance on the palate. This is one of the most beautiful whites that I’ve ever had. ”
