I am writing this directly after tasting a dozen or so wines on Tuesday afternoon, including the 2013 Pinot Noir from Starmont Winery by Merryvale. Merryvale has a long history of producing great wines and Starmont is just another feather in their cap.
Starting as an integral part of the Merryvale brand, Starmont purchased 50 acres of prime vineyards in Carneros in 2005. Now they are producing high quality wines from a number of different grape varietals.
I was very impressed with the 2013 Pinot Noir for it’s overall balance. At 5 years of age, it’s drinking at it’s absolute peak right now. This is the perfect light-bodied red to enjoy slightly chilled in this sweltering summer heat. Arrival is Thursday.
MySomm Tasting Notes: “Dried orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried cranberry all express themselves openly on the nose. The palate has a lovely light body that has been softened by a few years aging in bottle. The mid-palate is made up of notes of baking spices, rose petals, and cedar along with dried cherry. The finish has bright acidity and lingering earthy undertones. Perfect with Seared Duck Breast or Grilled Pork Chops. ”
MySomm Price: $23.90/btl
