Hopefully you’re all looking forward to a long Labor Day weekend coming up. With that in mind I’ve found a few gems for your imbibing pleasure. I’ve got a couple of different options in there for you so make sure to check them all out.
2014 J. Christopher Sauvignon Blanc-Willamette Valley
J. Christopher is one of my favorite little-known producers from the Willamette Valley. This Sauvignon Blanc is from the Croft Vineyard, a single, organically farmed vineyard in the Willamette Valley.
MySomm’s Tasting Notes: “A pure, Loire-style Sauvignon Blanc, this is fermented in 100% Stainless steel and doesn’t go through any malolactic fermentation. A highly aromatic nose of juniper, pine needles, passion fruit and citrus. The palate has intense flavors of green apple, and other citrus along with a mineral component. This light bodied wine is extremely crisp and has a wonderfully refreshing acidity.”
Normal Price: $23.56
MySomm Labor Day Price: $19.96
2014 J. Christopher “Cuvée Lunatique” Chardonnay-Willamette Valley
This is winemaker Jay Somers’ Chablis-esque production. No oak or Malolactic Fermentation is used on this wine. A crisp, pure expression of Chardonnay. This is one of the first “No-Oak” Chards to be produced in the area, before the idea took flight. Hence the name “Lunatique” as some thought Jay was crazy for trying it.
MySomm’s Tasting Notes: “This Chardonnay is all about bright citrus and mineral. Lemon curd, juicy pear, and apple pie are part of the lovely nose. On the palate the wine is light-medium bodied. In addition to the bright citrus and melon flavors there is a lovely chalky, slate characteristic and even a hint of salinity on the bright finish.”
Normal Price: $20.25
MySomm Labor Day Price: $16.50
2012 Bonny Doon “La Pousseur” Syrah-Central Coast
Bonny Doon is one of the coolest, most unique & intriguing wineries in California. They originally started out trying to (foolishly in their own words) replicate Burgundy varietals. Later they would find huge success working with Rhone varietals in California’s Central Coast.
MySomm’s Tasting Notes: “This is a delicious, approachable Syrah. The nose is extremely attractive, with bright red fruit and peppery notes combined with rose petals and delicious bacon aromas. In the mouth this is medium bodied with savory, earthy, meaty flavors to accompany the bright succulent fruit. Put a slight chill on this and it’s the perfect wine to go with your Labor Day BBQ.”
Normal Price: $24.26
MySomm Labor Day Price: $19.73
These are a variety of of wines that will please a wide array of palates. Get some of these to enjoy over your long weekend. And be sure to look out for part 2 on Friday.
Cheers from Ben & Mysomm!
