Achaval Ferrer has always been, in my opinion, one of the best wineries in South America. I’ve had the business manager of the winery in the store to do a tasting before and meeting him only enhanced my liking of this winery. Their varietal wines, like their Malbec & Cabernet Franc have always been exceptional values and their “Fincas” or single vineyards are at the top of the food chain in Argentina.
Now they have a new addition to the family…”AF” by Achaval Ferrer Malbec Blend. This is 85% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, & 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is aged for 6 months, half of which is in 3 year old French oak barrels and half in concrete tanks. This give the wine an awesome balance that makes it a tremendously balanced wine that will appeal to almost all palates. The price is just another attractive quality to this wine.
Only four cases of this wine coming in so make sure to respond to this e-mail to reserve yours.
MySomm Tasting Notes: “This has a fruit-driven nose with prominent aromas of ripe strawberry & juicy blackberry as well as non-fruit notes of thyme, mulling spices, & stony soil. The balanced aging in wood and concrete give this a medium body with robust, but not overpowering tannins. The fruit on the palate is dense and ripe but there are ample earth & spice tones to make this a harmonious, easy drinking wine. Drink now and over the next 3 years.”
