Top Wines of 2016 #5 – 2014 Les Granges Paquenesses “Savagnin la Pierre”

I try very hard to find and offer new and exciting wines for you to try. That being said, with having a business to run, I have to be careful to not get too nerdy or esoteric when featuring wines so as not to scare folks off. However, this wine was so intriguing and inspiring when I tasted it that I knew I had to offer it to you because I know that if anyone would appreciate this gem, it would be you guys. If you put some faith in me on this one I’m certain that you’ll be extremely pleased that you gave this one a shot.

A longtime favorite among the Sommelier community, only in recent years has Jura, a small region tucked between Burgundy and Switzerland, gotten the recognition that it deserves. Made with the grape variety “Savagnin”. the 2014 la Pierre from Paquenesses won me over immediately with it’s exotic nose and held me in completely in thrall with it’s complex palate long after swallowing.

MySomm Tasting Notes: “Out of the gate this wine exhibits an exotic nose with a wide array of sexy aromatics. Lemon curd, pineapple, fresh ginger, mascarpone, and wet crushed limestone are just a few of the aromas that jump out of the glass. In the mouth this wine is completely unique, showing a fuller, rich texture that is accompanied by a brightness that leads to perfect balance in the mouth. The wine does see some lees contact so there is a voluptuousness about the wine but the flavors on the mid palate are all about precision and purity. There is a lovely amalgam of nuttiness and apricot wrapped in minerality. The finish is long and clean with lovely acidity that leaves you wanting another sip.”

MySomm Price: $28.50/Delivered

This is a truly special and unique wine. It is a perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of food. It is probably the most exciting and inspired white wine that I tasted this year. I highly recommend you take a chance on this one, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
